The Trial Team

Dr Simon Langton Hewer, Consultant Paediatrician and TORPEDO-CF Lead Clinical Investigator:

Simon Langton Hewer is a Consultant in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine and an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Child Health based at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. Principally a clinician involved with children with cystic fibrosis and other respiratory problems, Simon is also heavily involved with and committed to research as a means of improving outcomes for clinical problems. He is the Chief Investigator on the TORPEDO-CF project which has been planned and designed to investigate whether intravenous eradication treatment is better than oral therapy for new infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. He is passionate about making clinical studies available to all CF patients regardless of whether their care is delivered entirely in a large centre or from smaller hospitals where care may be shared with larger centres. He is a father of 2 children and races bicycles.

Prof Alan Smyth, Consultant Paediatrician and TORPEDO-CF Co-Lead Clinical Investigator:

"I am a Professor of Child Health at the University of Nottingham and Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine at Nottingham Children's Hospital. I look after about 180 children and young people with Cystic Fibrosis. I see day to day the way that Pseudomonas can cause distressing symptoms and lead to a deterioration in the lungs of people with CF. I am passionate about finding safer more effective treatments for CF lung infections. I firmly believe that the decisions we make in the clinic and on the ward should be based on firm evidence. I am Co-ordinating Editor of the Cochrane Cystic Fibrosis & Genetic Disorders Group which systematically produces impartial summaries of the best evidence to guide clinical decisions."
